University-based IEEE Community

What is an IEEE Student Branch?

An IEEE Student Branch (SB) is a local unit of IEEE established within a university, designed to engage students in fields related to IEEE’s mission. The main objective of an SB is to foster connections among students—both within the university and with other IEEE Student Branches globally—as well as with industry professionals. These connections promote education, innovation, and technical development through collaboration and exposure to real-world challenges and solutions. Student Branches actively organize a variety of activities, including technical workshops, seminars, competitions, and project development. Many of these initiatives are eligible for funding and support through IEEE, helping to enrich the student experience and bridge the gap between academia and industry. Like the broader IEEE organization, an SB can also establish and host both technical societies and affinity groups that mirror IEEE’s official structure. These groups serve as a direct link to their parent IEEE entities and can be used to organize targeted events, receive funding, and pursue the specific goals and missions of each society or affinity group.
